PIPER NEWS

HADDINGTON PIPE BAND

Greetings from Scotland

With St Andrew’s Day, Christmas and Hogmanay all coming up, we thought the Society might possibly be interested in a new CD we’ve just launched (produced by Greentrax Recordings).  It has 14 tracks (33 tunes) of popular pipe band music from the 2009 Scottish Pipe Band of the Year.

We have put together a short (three-minute) video which features one of the tracks plus images of the band. It’s now on YouTube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX8G1ot7oVA

There’s more about the band and the CD on our website, www.haddingtonpipeband.co.uk. There’s also information there about ordering the CD, should you be interested in doing that. (It costs just £10 (plus postage and packing) and we’re turning orders around within 2-3 days.)

Many thanks for giving this your attention, and very best wishes,

Alastair Bruce

CELTIC EAGLE PIPE BAND WINS AWARDS
AT
2011 OHIO SCOTTISH GAMES

Akron's own Celtic Eagle Pipe Band placed in both the EUSPBA and the Ohio Valley competitions at the Ohio Scottish Games this year.  The band earned a solid 3rd place in both competitions (with esteemed judge Reay MacKay giving us first place marks in piping).  Even better yet, our drummers were given the distinction of best grade 5 drum corp at the games!!!  The tightness and consistency of our drummers really helped to push us into the top 3!!!  The placings earned the band some cash awards to help with the cost of outfitting and travel.

Our next competition will be in Edinboro PA, on July 30th and then Ligonier PA on September 10th.  We're constantly improving our technique during the summer and look forward to showing the piping world that the Celtic Eagle is truly on the hunt!

Bill Millin, a Scottish bagpiper who played during the D-day invasion,dies at 88;

Bill Millin, 88, a Scottish bagpiper who defied enemy fire as he led comrades into battle at the 1944 D-day landings in Normandy, France, died Wednesday at a hospital in Torbay, England, after a short illness, his family announced.
Despite being unarmed, and with friends falling around him, Millin led British troops ashore on Sword Beach, continuing to play his "Highland Laddie" tune.

His commanding officer, Lord Lovat, had asked him to ignore rules banning the playing of bagpipes in battle and requested that he play to rally his comrades. Millin was 21 at the time.

"When you're young, you do things you wouldn't dream of doing when you're older. I enjoyed playing the pipes, but I didn't notice I was being shot at," he said in a 2006 interview with the
BBC.

Millin, who was born July 14, 1922, in Glasgow, Scotland, became known as Piper Bill. His actions were portrayed in the 1962 film
"The Longest Day."

After the war, he played the bagpipes in a traveling theater troupe and later became a nurse who cared for mental patients in Glasgow.
