Past Sas'y News for reference & information.

Our October Sas'y meeting will feature a movie - with refreshments accordingly.  The movie will either be "Local Hero" or  "Ring of Bright Water."  The latter is a movie based on the book by Gavin Maxwell. It is considered to be a classic tale of the author's time on the coast of Scotland. The first half of the story is devoted to his learning to live in this isolated paradise and the second half to his time with two otters. His location while writing this book was the coast of Skye, in an area pointed out by our driver during the last trip.  "Local Hero" is the story of a man sent to Scotland by an American Oil company to buy up an entire village where they want to build a refinery. Things don't go as expected.  Both movies are charming stories and show the beautiful scenery where they were filmed.  If you have a preference, please let me know.

We need nominations!  Please e-mail me your nomination for the Rose and Thistle Award.  We will be presenting this at our St. Andrew's dinner.  This does not necessarily have to be a Sas'y member.  The award is given each year to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the Scottish American Community in our area. Past recipients have been:  Christy Urquhart Walsh, 2007, Richard Neidert, 2006, Agnes Bagley, 2005.

Ohio Mart at Stan Hywet is October 2nd -5th. Himself is once again doing the book tent for the event.  He needs help before and during - first for sorting the books and then for selling, sorting, and helping check out purchases.  (The latter is a "sit down" job.)  He also needs books.  If you have any to donate please bring them to Stan Hywet Hall.  The tent is located just off the parking lot. Please make sure the books are well inside the tent in case no one is present to accept them.  Books left near the edge are doomed if it rains!  Anyone willing to help should contact him by e-mail:  jfrost@nls.net. Or they can call on the telephone:  330-882-0342.

Be sure and save the date for Saturday, October 11th - 12:00 to 4:00 PM. That's the "Taste of Scotland" event presented by the Tigh Na Creige Highland Dancers.  Last year it was lots of fun despite the rather blustery climate outside.  Gave participants a real taste of Scottish weather in addition to the good food and entertainment going on inside.

FREE TO GOOD HOME - Gene Marcus has a "Flower of Scotland" kilt that he will gladly pass along to anyone who is interested.  For more information, contact Gene at:  marcusgab@sbcglobal.net  or call at:  330-499-1681.

We are planning to have a public-invited St. Andrews Dinner instead of inviting all to the Sas'y Solstice Celebration. It may be held on Friday, December 5th due to schedule conflicts.  Christy Walsh is checking into possible caterers, but it will probably be a potluck dinner.  Save stuff for the silent auction.  We will be raising money to pay our pipe bands for the Beltane.  We do this to focus on Pegasus for funds raised at the Beltane itself. If you have any ideas/suggestions we'd love to hear them.

There is also a members and guests only Sas'y Solstice Celebration in the planning stages.  It will take place at John Knox Church on December 27th. More on this later.

Don't forget to tune your radio in today and every Sunday to:  Sounds of Britain and Ireland, with Joe Nicholls and Kevin McGinty. It is on from 4 to 5PM on WCPN  90.3 FM.  Joe is very good about helping us with publicity for our events, and often has news of the Scottish community we might otherwise miss.

Bill Kennedy would like to remind you that he sponsors a wonderful site for those Scots who wish to keep in touch with each other, post information, or learn about activities and events in the Scottish Community.  Check out:   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ScotClansofOhio/
Bill would also like you to get in touch with him if you are interested in The Scottish American Military Society and live in Northeast Ohio.  Their website is: http://www.s-a-m-s.org/

We have a good time at Scottish Country Dancing on Friday evenings. We have an excellent instructor in Frances Acar who is very patient.  She welcomes the participation of all ages and skill levels. You can't be too old or too young to participate. Our dancers range in age from 7 to 98.  Classes are held at Christ Episcopal Church. Address: 118 S. Mantua St, Kent, 44240.  If you need further information or directions, you can call Frances at: 330-673-6514 or
e-mail her at:  Frances.acar@gmail.com  Frances also holds classes in Scottish Gaelic and singing.

The meeting was fun.  Agnes was very pleased with her small birthday tribute - the expression on her face when Brian began to play "Happy Birthday" on his pipes was absolutely priceless.  Gene Marcus did an excellent and interesting presentation on golf.  Bill Heflin brought along some replica balls which he allowed everyone to examine closely.  The next meeting will be our October 12th meeting which will be a film.

Giantfest is getting bigger and more interesting.  Several of our members marched the half mile to the cemetery in appropriate costume.  Dianne Allison gave her speech on the Giants of Seville so often I'm sure she is without voice by now.  Few of us walked back from the cemetery, most preferred to ride on the hay wagon instead. More fun.

Our members have always been wonderful about supporting Stan Hywet in many ways and it is very much appreciated by the folks there.

We are planning to have a public-invited St. Andrews Dinner instead of inviting all to the Sas'y Solstice Celebration. Christy Walsh has us scheduled for Nov. 29th (this date may be revised) at the rec. center where she has her "Taste of Scotland" event.  It will probably be a potluck dinner this year, with a silent auction. If you have any ideas/suggestions we'd love to hear them.

MEETING IS TODAYSeptember 14th. We'll be at the Library again. Time is 3:00 to 5:00. Gene Marcus will do a presentation on golf.  We'll bet that it will be interesting - it's a subject close to his heart.  We will be celebrating Agnes Bagley's 99th birthday (actually September 27th).  Agnes doesn't do e-mail so hopefully it will be a surprise.  A birthday cake and a tune or two by our Sas'y piper, Brian McElhiney, will help make it a special event.

Ligonier Prizes - I understand the Tigh na Creige dancers did well, but we don't yet have a list of prizes won by the dancers for the summer competitions.  Christy promises she is working on one, though.  The Great Lakes Gaelic Society's Waulking Team did not, for the first time in four years, win first in the Waulking competition.  They took second.  Nice of them to give the other teams a break, wasn't it?  Our Frances took 1st in the Gaelic Singing "Slow Song" for women, 2nd equal for Mouth Music, 3rd in Song, and 2nd Overall for Women.  Congratulations to all.

Also, be thinking over nominations for our Rose and Thistle Award.  Members may e-mail them to me or pass along suggestions on Sunday.

The North Coast Pipe Band will be performing at the Yankee Peddler Festival at Clay's Park in Canal Fulton - Saturday AND Sunday (3 short shows each day) September 20th & 21st.

Giantfest is coming up September 20th and 21st in Seville.  The Scottish Memorial March will take place on Saturday, September 20th at 4PM.  Transportation to the cemetery will be provided for those who do not wish to march.

The Ligonier Games are over.  I haven't heard any results yet, but when we get them, we'll pass them along.  Possibly at the meeting next week. The Ligonier Highland Games are fast approaching.  They are this coming weekend - September 5th-6th, 9 AM to 6 PM at Idlewild Park in Ligonier Pennsylvania.  It's only a short journey away.  Many of our own will be competing there.  The Tigh na Creige dancers will be seeking more prizes to add to those they have collected so far this summer, and the Waulking Team will be looking to take home first place once again.  Frances Acar's singers and story tellers will be competing in the Mod.
Dreama Powell's Celtic harpers will be competing in the musical area and the Celtic Eagle will be competing in the pipe band competition.  All well worth hearing and cheering.  Plus it's just a nice way to while away a pleasant weekend.  Admission cost is $15 adults, Seniors $12, Children 6-12 $5. Free parking.  For more information: www.ligoniergames.org

Wow!
I am told that the Akron and District Pipe Band played the opening for the recent Rod Stewart concert at Blossom Music Center.  Can you beat that? Sure wish we had been there to hear it.  They even got special seating right down in front to hear him.  That's one of the largest crowds they have entertained in the more than
30 years they have been in existence.  Congratulations guys and gals!  Great job!
(And applause to the family members who sat on the lawn - in the rain - to hear them.)

Mark your calendar for September 14th.  That's our first Sas'y meeting in a long time.

Ohio Mart at Stan Hywet is October 2nd -5th. Himself is once again doing the book tent for the event.  He needs help before and during - first for sorting the books and then for selling, sorting, and helping check out purchases.  (The latter is a "sit down" job.)  He also needs books.  If you have any to donate please bring them to the September meeting (we'll transfer them from vehicle to vehicle in the library garage.)  I am resigned to giving up house space until we can transfer them to the tent.  Sigh.

Also be sure and save the date for Saturday, October 11th - 12:00 to 4:00 PM. That's the "Taste of Scotland" event presented by the Tigh Na Creige Highland Dancers.  Last year it was lots of fun despite the rather blustery climate outside.  Gave participants a real taste of Scottish weather in addition to the good food and entertainment going on inside.

Our October Sas'y meeting will feature a movie - with refreshments accordingly.  The movie will either be "Local Hero" or "Gregory's Girl."  Now that I think of it, maybe "Trainspotting" or even one I watched and thoroughly enjoyed called "Ring of Bright Water."  We will definitely have a movie one way or another.

We are planning to have a public-invited St. Andrews Dinner instead of the Sas'y Solstice Celebration. Christy Walsh has us scheduled for Nov. 29th at the rec. center where she has her "Taste of Scotland" event, but this is tentative. If you have any ideas/suggestions we'd love to hear them.

Don't forget to tune your radio in today and every Sunday to:  Sounds of Britain and Irelandwith Joe Nicholls and Kevin McGinty.

[It is air conditioned.] Address: 118 S. Mantua St, Kent, 44240.  If you need further information or directions, you can call Frances at: 330-673-6514 or e-mail her at:  Frances.acar@gmail.com
Frances also holds classes in Scottish Gaelic and singing.

Our October Sas'y meeting will feature a movie - with refreshments accordingly.  The movie will either be "Local Hero" or "Gregory's Girl."  Have the former, but hoping to get the latter.  These films are among four designated as the best films about Scotland - another being "Whisky Galore" which we viewed last year thanks to Frances Acar and "Trainspotting," which we will schedule another time.

Bill Kennedy reports from the Detroit Scottish Games that the Akron based Celtic Eagle pipe band won the grade V competition and Lord Ailsa, Chief of Clan Kennedy, presented the award to Tim Wiley. Many of the members of the Celtic Eagle band play with the Akron and District.  CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM.  Quite an achievement for a new band.

Rev. Stan Wallace dropped us a line from Seattle to tell us that he had "baptized a new generation of Braveheart descendents, Jackson & Sarah Wallace, 9 1/2 months."  They should be home by now.  Let's hope he brings photos.

Florence Campbell had eye surgery on August 7th.  I'm sure she would appreciate a card or two. Send them to her house:  2544 Ironstone St., NE, Canton 44705-2918, or via e-mail: flobeth227@sbcglobal.net.

The good news is, the wrens have flown off to seek their fame and fortune.  Okay, maybe not.  But one way or another, we have our deck back.  We can enjoy our breakfast without being "dive bombed" by the birds.  Everything is blooming and beautiful out there.  Stop by for a chat or a meal any time.

Florence Campbell has been caring for a lovely, neutered tom cat that someone dumped off in her allotment.  She has other animals and needs to find this one a home.  If you can help, please let me know and I will have her contact you directly.

Don Mellen's mom is celebrating her 100th birthday this week.  What a wonderful milestone!  If you would care to send her a special birthday wish, her address is:  Mrs. Edith Mellen, c/o Canton Regency, 4507 22nd St. NW, Canton, OH 44708.

The picnic was great fun.  And (as always) the Sas'y cooks came through with some scrumptious stuff.  Larry & Judy Hunter brought Swedish and barbecued meat balls.  Scottish? Yep - from highland cattle.  Agnes brought her shortbread and everyone kept picking at it - making sure they got some before it was gone.  Needless to say by the time we actually got around to dessert, there was none left.  The wrens behaved for the party, but have been intolerant ever since.  We're staying off our deck until those babies leave the nest.

Today is the Sas'y picnic!  Come on by about 3:00 (ish).  Just a casual get together.  The wrens have a nest on our back deck, so you may have to fight off a couple of tiny birds, but other than that we should have a very pleasant time. If you need directions, they are on the web site under "Recent and Upcoming Events" - scroll down to the link "Directions to Frost House" & click.

We'll provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, and buns. You bring a salad, snack, dessert, whatever. Agnes Bagley is bringing her super fantabulous prize-winning shortbread for the occasion.  Hope she made plenty.
