Think Spring!
Several of us braved the elements (trust me, that night spring
was not in evidence) to see Mary Queen of Scots Got Her
Head Chopped Off in Freedlander Theatre at The College of Wooster. As usual with productions done there, it was excellent. Hard to describe, but the cast
had worked hard to present a program that was Scottish and historically
accurate. We all enjoyed it very much.
Our next meeting is on Sunday, the 14th of March. Rapidly approaching!
You won't want to miss this one,Dave Allison is speaking on the Whisky
Rebellion. No samples - sorry.
Once again, a reminder. To those of you planning
to make your yearly voluntary contribution to the Scottish
American Society. We will soon be applying for a 501 (c) (3) status for the group, but in the meantime the Celtic Beltane Festival is already in that category. So if you
would prefer that your donation be tax deductible, please make your check out to the Celtic Beltane Festival and give it (or send it) to me so that I can
make note & have it credited properly.

27th February 2010
Take heart - spring will soon be here. Honest. The great blue
herons have returned to the area and are already laying eggs.
A few warbler "scouts" have been seen. I hear the birds singing spring songs. It will soon be warm and sunny.
The Akron Library is a marvel. Please give it your support.
We are so very fortunate to have this facility in our community.
The building is superior and the personnel helpful and courteous. They kindly took the Akron
Burns Society books to the Special Collections department, where they will remain for any and all to view.
Tonight we are heading over to the College of Wooster to see Mary
Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off. We'll do a quick review
next week for those of you who cannot make it in person. All curtain times are at 8:15 PM in
Freedlander Theatre at The College of Wooster. I don't know if there are tickets left, but you could call and check if the idea is interesting.
Once again, a reminder. To those of you planning to make
your yearly voluntary contribution to the Scottish American Society.

20th February 2010
Building a snowman yet? Seems as if we should be having fun with all
this snow.
The meeting last week went very well. Those who missed it should
forever regret not hearing Himself's rendition of the "Ode to the Haggis."
Inimitable! But most of all, they missed the beautiful Carol Leslie Hosticka singing
"The Star O Rabbie Burns." Even the library personnel, up in the control booth, commented on her
lovely voice. Add to that Agnes Bagley's shortbread and joining
hands to sing "Auld Lang Syne" at her suggestion. We felt like a
family.
One mention of the library personnel. The Akron Library is a marvel.
We are so very fortunate to have this facility in our community.
The building is superior and the personnel helpful and courteous. They kindly took the Akron

SNOWPOCALYPSE !
There sure is a lot of snow out there, folks...
I don't know how it looks at your house, but it's absolutely gorgeous in
our back yard. Hope it clears up by next week though - for
all those sweethearts that are planning a special Valentine celebration and for those who will be attending
our meeting at the library on Sunday.
One thing I plan to do is bring the minutes from the Akron Burns Society
to that meeting. We will be turning the books over to the library
(by prior arrangment), but they were kindly donated to us last summer. If you'd like to take a
look, they will be with me then.
We hear from Scotland that our group will get a discount on a Ghost
Walk tour in Stirling. I know it's not relevant to most of you, but if
you plan a visit next year simply showing your membership card will guarantee you a 10% discount
on the ticket price (£6 for adults, £4 for children, students and seniors). A 20-25% discount will be available for pre-booked group parties of ten or more.
The College of Wooster will be presenting, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her
Head Chopped Off on February 24, 25, 26, and 27th. All curtain
times are at 8:15 PM in Freedlander Theatre at The College of Wooster. The
ticket price is $9.00 for adults. If there is enough interest, we could get a lower group rate. Let me know if
you would like to attend and we'll see if we can work it out. We
are thinking of attending the Saturday performance.
Once again, a reminder. To those of you planning to make your
yearly voluntary contribution to the Scottish American Society.

January 30th 2010
Enjoying the frigid weather? It's time to cuddle with a good
book, or visit with a friend over a cup of hot chocolate while discussing
past events. Today we have warm memories of the grand Burns Supper we enjoyed last week at
SHANO. Wow, was it ever a wonderful event. As always.
This year, Lord Charles Kennedy, 8th Marquess of Ailsa, 19th Earl of Cassillis,
and Chief of Clan Kennedy, was the honored guest. He spoke well,
entertaining everyone with his humor and charming manner. Three
pipe bands added to the exuberance, and the pretty Jenny May Caronchi dancers, the Heather Belles,
entertained with their contemporary highland dance styles. There was
more. Much more. An evening to file away in the happy memory file.
One of the biggest surprises came when they announced the winner of the
SHANO "Hall of Fame" award, given to the person who has contributed the
most to the furtherance of Scottish Culture in our area.Imagine our surprise
(and unmitigated delight) when it turned out to be our very own Frances Acar. I'm
still bursting with pride. CONGRATULATIONS FRANCES
!!! Well done. Much deserved. Hooray!

23 January 2010
Tonight is the annual Burns supper put on by SHANO. If you have missed
this dinner, then you have missed the best this area has to offer.
They do an outstanding job and have for many years. We've gone for the better part
of thirty five years and they have always been wonderful. Next year, make plans to attend. It's well worth the
effort.
I was told yesterday by a pleasant young man with a rich Scottish accent,
that our agriculture department is possibly oing to lift the restriction
on the import of real haggis from Scotland. Halleluia! Maybe soon those who have never tasted
the real thing will get a chance. Now that's something to really look forward to.

Tomorrow is our meeting at the library - weather
permitting, of course. Looks okay so far. Bob Morehead will be there
to present on Mary Queen of Scots. He promises. Meeting begins at 3:00 and there will be refreshments.Bob is our favorite raconteur. Everyone enjoys his talks, no matter what topic
he chooses.
It has come to my attention that some of you are planning to make
your yearly voluntary contribution to the Scottish American Society.

January 2nd 2010
Well, the holidays are over and everything is at least approaching normal.
Once we get all the decorations down, sorted, and packed away the house
looks so empty, but somehow I always feel a bit relieved. It was a wonderful time to
stow away in my memory.
Hope your holiday was just as nice. Tell us all about it when
we get together on the 10th of January at the library. Bob Morehead
has promised to make good on his speech. Wearing a hair shirt, no doubt.

December 26th
Next week I'll get back to normal. (Well, I'll try anyhow.)
But this week I'm still basking in the glow of the wonderful Christmas
we just celebrated. In the meantime, I'll wish you a Happy
Boxing Day, with the following explanation for those who do not know what
the heck I'm talking about. This was gleaned from Scottie, at Rampant Scotland.
Origins The reason that the December 26th was known
as 'Boxing Day' was the fact that many centuries ago, the Lord and Lady of the manor/castle/estate gathered together at the
manor house, castle etc., the workers including those from the outlying fields, forests and streams, the day after Christmas
Day and organised the distribution of the annual necessities, done according to the status of the worker and the size of the
family. Into boxes and barrels would go supplies of cloth spun
by the spinsters, the cobblers leather goods, new tools and supplies of salt and spices. Also dried goods such as meat, fish,
vegetables and some fruit and cereals grown on the estate for bread making. This the giving out of such boxes became "Boxing
Day".
Sweetie Scone Day Also it was that Boxing Day was in some
parts of Scotland was known as 'Sweetie Scone' Day. As part of the Festive Fayre in humble hooses, the cottage gudebread included
'sweetie-skons' (Sweetie Scones), which contained dried fruit and spices, and were the forerunner of oor modern "Currant Loaf".
The ingredients more than likely given by the Lord or Lady of the estate, as there were few homes that could afford such luxury
of dried fruit and spices, but friendly neighbours would make up the deficit to those that could not afford, nor had the ingredients.
So it was the custom that either the Lord / Lady of the estate, to their workers, would invite them to sample or to give the
'sweetie-skon' or that neighbours would invite neighbours to sample or give the 'Sweetie Scone' to others.

19th December 2009
We've baked and distributed tons of cookies. Okay, maybe not
tons, but it surely was a lot. Himself has been wrapping presents for days. Seems so much work only to watch
them quickly opened in one fell swoop. Ach weel. It's only one day a year.
Santa stops by here on Christmas Eve - I mean, really. Portage
Lakes Kiwanis makes sure he gets a little extra push for his sleigh. These wonderful folks do this every year.
It is absolutely awesome. Ask our Larry Hunter about it sometime.
I sincerely hope you all have wonderful holidays ahead. This
is a very good time of the year for those who have someone to enjoy it with. If you know of someone who will be
alone, I hope you will extend a hand to them. Hospitality is important to Scottish homes - maybe not gifts so much,
but genuinely seeing to it that folks aren't forgotten or neglected - that certainly is..

If you went to the St. Andrews (and are still enjoying the memory), I just want to remind you that it will be
repeated next year. In the meantime, Ken Luyster lost his camera. He left it on the table after the dinner. If you hear
of anyone who found a camera, or if you hear of anyone who discovered they had the wrong camera, please let me know. They
would know it wasn't their camera by the pictures on it. There were pictures Kenny had taken of Grandfather Mountain,
his cat, etc. It is a Kodak 10.3 pixel camera.
Right now we're getting ready for cookie baking and present wrapping. The tree is up and
the house is decorated. This is always a jolly time at our home. Betcha you are busy getting
ready for the holidays as well.

Last chance to vote The
vote for the Rose and Thistle Award was collected at the meeting, but if you missed it and still want to vote, you may do so via e-mail: mfrost@nls.net And please do - we have a tie and we need to hear from you. [See below for nominees.]
Our three nominees are:
Bill Kennedy Bill is a
real leader in the Scottish Community. He founded our Celtic Beltane Festival and worked as head of that event for many years.
In addition he works for the Scottish American Military Organization and is the Deputy Chief and Vice President of the Kennedy
Society of North America. Bill has been our emcee at many events, lending his smile and enthusiasm everywhere he appears.
Brian McElhiney Brian
is our official Scottish American Society piper. He is always willing to help out whenever we ask - for sad occasions and
glad ones. He is also the Pipe Sergeant of the Akron & District Pipe Band and represents the Scottish American community
in many venues. He has spoken to our group on more than one occasion, and will be performing for us at the St. Andrews.
Dreama Powell Dreama
does speeches throughout the community featuring Scottish customs and costumes. She is active in SACSO and in the Northeast
Ohio Harp Association. She brings her harpers to the Celtic Beltane Festival and will be performing herself at our St. Andrews.
Her window display for Ohio Scottish Games in Wellington won first
prize one year. She showed a whisky collection and thus helped promote both OSG and the Scottish culture (this from a gal
that so far as I know never touches a drop of whisky!) She is currently trying to organize a historical museum for the Northhampton
Historical Society.

Congratulations to Tim Wiley and his wife, Kate,
on the birth of a handsome, healthy, 8 pound 6 ounce, 21 inch boy named Samuel James Patrick Wiley. Samuel arrived just after midnight
on October 29th, 2009. (Presume the lad will be
playing the pipes before he gets to toddling
around...)
Congratulations, too, to Larry Hunter (one time
MacGonagall award winner) who landed a 10# steelhead rainbow trout
at Grand River this week. Not sure if it's a record, but it's pretty darn big. Bigger than Samuel James
Patick Wiley!

Don't look at your calendar. It's

Nancy Haggard Davis once again did not disappoint with her tips on doing
Genealogy (Did you hit your brick wall? Hear the bells?) We
appreciate her taking the time to give us some assistance and to tell
