A SCOTTISH CELEBRATION OF SPRING

The 4th Annual Brigadoon Beltane Festival

(Formerly the Celtic Beltane Festival)

The Scottish American Society sponsored its fourth annual Brigadoon Beltane Festival on Saturday the 31st of May 2008 at Maize Valley Market & Winery, 6193 Edison Street NE (State Route 619) just east of Hartville, Ohio.

The festival and proved to be absolutely great.  The threatening weather never went farther than threatening.  The wind must have blown the rain on by us.  We had good attendance and a wonderful program with plenty of family participation.  That's what we're all about.  We had hoped for an event that was entertaining and enlightening and we got it.  Thanks to the wonderful new pavilion provided by Bill Bakan (Maize Valley Winery) we had a great area to stage our dancers, singers, instrumentalists, and pipe bands.

The highland athletes did their thing up on the hill.  Folks could stop on the way up to visit with Dennis Gressock as a highland soldier, give a pat to the Highland Cattle, and enjoy the view. Traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales was featured via bands and through J & C Entertainment. There was a basket raffle with many interesting items featured.  All proceeds from this raffle will benefit Pegasus.

The Welsh Country Dancers from Columbus performed and taught their traditional dances. The award winning Tigh Na Creige Highland Dance Group presented highland dance, and the Heather Belles of the Jenny May dance school also featuring award winning dancers, performed highland and more contemporary highland dance routines. Scottish Country Dancers from Kent, Ohio  demonstrated dances anyone can easily learn.  Celtic harpers played gently and beautifully, the McKenney family (a whole lot of cute) performed, One More Pint played Celtic tunes as did Brian & Julie McElhiney, joined by the Ceilidh Band.  Tim & Christy Walsh had athletic events the kids could compete in - the caber was a tad more forgiving than the one the highland athletes use, , a demonstration of “waulking” the wool, sheep shearing, traditional food and beverages wre available from Heather MacNaughton and British Pastries.  There were books for sale and wine tasting for the adults at the Winery.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Pegasus, an association dedicated to horseback riding therapy for those who are disabled or handicapped. For more information on Pegasus, see their web site at: www.pegasusfarm.org

A great big thank you to everyone.  From the group who worked hard getting this set up and running, to the volunteers who showed up and lent us hands and muscles, to the clans, vendors, Hyde Park Cattle, highland athletes, and all who attended and/or participated.  A huge thank you to Bill Bakan and Maize Valley Winery for everything - from providing us with a place to hold our festival to his valuable comments, constructive criticisms & suggestions, and his patience with us.

Especially thanks to whoever was responsible for that beautiful, beautiful day.
