Sunday November 23rd, 2008
How often do you get a chance to have a good time and benefit others at
the same time? You can do exactly that by supporting our St. Andrews Dinner
on December 5th, 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Reservations by November
30th, please.
Proceeds from the dinner and the Silent Auction which takes place at the
event will be used to pay expenses for our Beltane Festival next May.
Profits from the Beltane Festival benefit handicapped children who have
lost their ability to walk, but can "fly" on horseback through the special
programs offered at Pegasus. We're proud of supporting this fine organization and we know that more and more charitable institutions are failing due to the current economic situation. We urge you to support our efforts and theirs. If you cannot attend, we will gladly accept donations.
The St. Andrews Dinner will be held at the Northwest Family Recreation
Center, 1730 Shatto Avenue, Akron, OH 44313. (Directions below.)
Cost will be $15 Adults, $12 Seniors (over 65), $10 kids (12 & under). Cost includes dinner, dessert, beverages. We will present our Rose and Thistle Award at this dinner.
Voting has taken place.
Information on the St. Andrews Dinner is on our web site under "Special
Events" . There is also an order form page (click on there to reveal).
Entertainment will include piping by Brian McElhiney and Jon Lilley, with sound system provided by J & C Entertainment. Bill Kennedy will emcee and there will be dancing of all kinds, including highland
dances by the Tigh na Creige highland dancers and Ceilidh dances in which
all can participate. There will be a silent auction - do your Christmas shopping here! Checks may be made out to Scottish American Society and sent to our Treasurer, Don Mellen: 4820 Carlton NW, Canton, Ohio 44709. Tables seat 6 to 8. If you wish to sit together, please make a note of that when you reserve. No tickets will be sent out, reservations will be held at the door.

Directions to the St. Andrews
It's really easy to get to and parking is immediately adjacent to
the building, thus making handicapped access simple.
Take I-77 to the White Pond Exit. Branch off immediately onto
Mull Avenue. Take Mull Avenue to the traffic circle on Hawkins.
You'll see St. Sebastians church and school right in front of you. Go three fourths of the way around the circle, follow the signs toward Stan Hywet, staying on Hawkins. Continue on Hawkins past Garmen Road and over the railroad tracks. Take the second left street, Shatto
Avenue, past the church and turn into the Akron Library entrance.
The rec. center is in back of the library.

Our next meeting is TODAY, Sunday, November 9th, 3:00 p.m.at the library. It will be a business
meeting followed by a "Scottish Treasures" demonstration. Bring something Scottish that you treasure and tell us all about it.
Our big event coming up is the St. Andrew's Day dinner. It will be held at the Northwest Family
Recreation Center, 1730 Shatto Avenue, Akron, OH 44313. Cost will be $15 Adults, $12 Seniors
(over 65), $10 kids (12 & under). ost includes dinner, dessert, beverages. We will present

We have three well qualified nominations for the Rose and Thistle Award. As you know, the award is
given each year to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the Scottish American
Community in our area. Past recipients have been: Christy Urquhart Walsh, 2007, Richard Neidert,
2006, Agnes Bagley,
2005. This is not limited to Sas'y members. We will be voting at the November meeting.
You may submit your vote via e-mail if you choose. We have already received several votes.
Nominated are: Frances Acar, Brian McElhiney, and Donne Shepperly.
Frances Acar heads our Beltane Celebration and is on the Board of the Scottish American
Cultural Society of Ohio. She supports many area Scottish efforts, teaches Scottish Gaelic and song,
presents participants in Gaelic mods, and teaches Scottish Country Dancing. Her students have won
many prizes in competitions over the years. She now teaches Gaelic via the Internet (don't know
how she does that) and thus reaches far outside our community.
Brian McElhiney is our designated Sas'y piper. And we are delighted that
he is. However he also plays in the Akron & District pipe band, and works hard in many areas
of the Beltane Festival along with his wife, Julie. We can count on Brian. As his nominator
pointed out, he has Scotland in his mind every day, tells stories of Scottish history, and embraces
the culture. Together Brian and Julie make a team that we could not easily do without.
Donne Shepperly: Donne handles the Clan Tents for us at the Beltane and
also at the Ohio Scottish Games. She is on the Board of Scottish American Cultural Society of Ohio
and also is the Great Lakes Regional Commissioner of Clan Donald USA. Not a small achievement!
She and her husband Craig are well known throughout the area Scottish groups. Donne and Craig support our
Sas'y activities and have been a great help to us over the years.

of her. Hope the birthday celebration was postponed a bit.
On November 9th, I will celebrate 45 years with Himself. And a grand journey it has been. Happy
Anniversary to my sweetheart! m.a.

Shadows
For those of us who knew her, the passing of Merry Jayne McMichael this past August was
a sad loss. Merry Jayne designed the Ohio Tartan that graces the cover of our Ohio Scottish Games program
and was a very dear friend of ours. We only recently learned of her return from
Georgia and have kept in touch via telephone and e-mail. Unfortunately, we can no longer reach her that way.
Julie McElhiney is ill with gall bladder problems. She is scheduled for surgery tomorrow,
November 3rd, which also happens to be her birthday. We suspect her birthday celebration will be
short, but Happy Birthday anyhow Julie!

What a lovely day! Perfect weather
to live in Ohio. There is no where else on earth I would rather be
at this time of year. The fall colors are at their peak. Hope you get out to see them.
First and foremost, I have a specific request from Joe Nichols to
support WCPN with a pledge in support of their program: Sounds
of Britain and Ireland. with Joe and Kevin McGinty. It is
on from 4 to 5PM on WCPN 90.3 FM.
I went on-line to make a donation individually. It's easy
to do and may ensure continuing support for organizations like ours.
If you don't want to do it on line, you may make a pledge by calling: (216)
916-6100. Or you can mail your gift to:
Member Services 90.3 WCPN ideastream® Idea Center™ at PlayhouseSquare
1375 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, OH 44115-1835
I sent a separate note explaining that this program was the reason for our
support. The pledge information can still be included until 2:00
PM Sunday.

Today is our October Sas'y meeting. The movie will be "Local
Hero." It was first released 25 years ago this month. There
is a celebration of this film, the participants and those who produced it, in New York this week.
"Local Hero" is the story of a man sent to Scotland by an American
Oil company to buy up an entire village where they want to build
a refinery. Things don't go as expected. Peter Reigert is the star of the film, with a hilarious portrayal of an oil company executive by Burt Lancaster. The scenery and the story are both memorable.
We have three well qualified nominations for the Rose and Thistle

The "Taste of Scotland" event
was charming, as always. Seemed to be a lot of folks milling about, enjoying the food and the events. Much of the food was put together by the mothers
of the dancers, but included some provided by our own inimitable and amazing Agnes Bagley. We saw many familiar faces and made some new friends. A successful day out, indeed! Hope you had
a chance to stop by.

Ohio Mart is almost over. Today is the last day. It's a major fund-raiser for Stan Hywet Hall,
which in turn is a major asset to our local area. I think we are all proud of having made many
contributions to this institution over the years. As I looked around the Mart, I was very pleased
and impressed with all the Sas'y connected folks - visiting, shopping, working, entertaining. So
many I cannot even name them all. I saw Ginny busily making coffee and selling doughnuts, Brian
and the Akron & District pipe band members played with great gusto. Bert May and his wife Jane
brought out of town guests to shop and enjoy. Stan Wallace, Mary Craig, Dianne & Dave Allison,
Liz & Kim Belvin, and many others
helped Himself with the book tent. I know Lori Neidert was there somewhere, though I missed seeing her. Kerry Cavett and his trio entertained visitors. Thank you all, by the way, for your contributions
to the book tent. I don't know how much we finally made there, but on the first miserably cold and
rainy day we made over $1,000 for the SHH foundation. Couldn't have done it without you.
We will be voting at the October meeting, but
if you will not be attending, you can submit your vote to me via email.

Our October Sas'y meeting will feature a movie - with refreshments accordingly. The movie will either
be "Local Hero" or "Ring of Bright Water." The latter is a movie based on the book by Gavin
Maxwell. It is considered to be a classic tale of the author's time on the coast of Scotland.
The first half of the story is devoted to his learning to live in this isolated paradise and the second
half to his time with two otters. His location while writing this book was the coast of Skye,
in an area pointed out by our driver during the last trip.
"Local Hero" is the story of a man sent to Scotland by an American Oil company to buy up
an entire village where they want to build a refinery. Things don't go as expected. Both movies
are charming stories and show the beautiful scenery where they were filmed. If you have a preference,
please let me know.
Be sure and save the date for Saturday, October 11th - 12:00 to 4:00
PM. That's the "Taste of Scotland" event presented by the
Tigh Na Creige Highland Dancers. Last year it was lots of fun despite the rather blustery climate outside. Gave participants a real taste of Scottish weather in addition
to the good food and
entertainment going on inside. Taste of Scotland will be held at the Northwest Family Recreation
Center, 1730 Shatto Avenue, Akron OH - 44313. For more information call:
330-375-2849 or listen to Joe Nichols program today, he will be discussing
the event with Kevin McGinty.
Don't forget to tune your radio in today and every Sunday to: Sounds of Britain and
Ireland, with Joe Nicholls and Kevin McGinty. It is on from 4 to 5PM on WCPN 90.3
FM. Joe is very good about helping us with publicity for our events, and often has news of
the Scottish community we might otherwise miss.
FREE TO GOOD HOME - Gene Marcus has a "Flower of Scotland" kilt that he will gladly
pass along to anyone who is interested. For more information, contact Gene at: marcusgab@sbcglobal.net or call at: 330-499-1681.
We are planning to have a public-invited St. Andrews Dinner instead of inviting all to
the Sas'y Solstice Celebration. It may be held on Friday, December 5th due to schedule conflicts.
Christy Walsh is checking into possible caterers, but it will probably be a potluck dinner. Save
stuff for the silent auction. We will be raising money to pay our pipe bands for the Beltane.
We do this to focus on Pegasus for funds raised at the Beltane itself. If you have any ideas/suggestions
we'd love to hear them.
There is also a members and guests only Sas'y Solstice Celebration in the planning stages. It
will take place at John Knox Church on December 27th. More on this later.
Bill Kennedy would like to remind you that he sponsors a wonderful site for those Scots who
wish to keep in touch with each other, post information, or learn about activities and events in
the Scottish Community. Check out: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ScotClansofOhio/
Bill would also like you to get in touch with him if you are interested in The Scottish American Military
Society and live in Northeast Ohio. Their website is: http://www.s-a-m-s.org/
We have a good time at Scottish Country Dancing on Friday evenings. We have an excellent instructor in Frances Acar who is very patient. She welcomes the participation of all ages and skill levels. You can't
be too old or too young to participate. Our dancers range in age from 7 to 98. Classes
are held at Christ
Episcopal Church. Address: 118 S. Mantua St, Kent, 44240. If you need further information
or directions, you can call Frances at: 330-673-6514 or e-mail her at:
Frances.acar@gmail.com
Frances also holds classes in Scottish Gaelic and singing.
